Comparison of Gog and Beast / Antichrist

Appendix 2: Comparison of Gog and Beast / Antichrist

In addition to the linguistic evidence, we also have a lot of Scriptural evidence that shows that Gog is the same person as the Beast. There are two different titles for the same individual. Gog in Ezekiel 38 and 39 is the same person that we read about as the little horn in the Book of Daniel and the beast in Revelation. He has a lot of different titles just as we discovered Satan had many titles in the ancient world such as Enlil, Marduk, Baal, etc.

To properly demonstrate they are the same, we also have to consider the Two passages that speak of the battle they fight. The timing of the battle of Gog and Magog is sometimes considered to be years before the battle of Armageddon and questioning that timing is difficult to entertain because it means radical changes in one’s already crystalized beliefs eschatological systems which are built one on another. I am sympathetic if you consider them to be separate events; I once did as well. There have been many theologies I abandoned because I could not reconcile them with all of Scripture. If you are like me, however, knowing what really is going to happen is more exciting than holding on to a theology. Thus, I respectfully and sympathetically request you to consider the evidence with me to see if Gog’s war in Ezekiel 38 and 39 is the same as Armageddon.

There are powerful reasons that Gog and Antichrist are the same person and Gog’s war, and Armageddon are one and the same event. God established the principle of two or three witnesses (Deut 19:15). That means, for an event as epic and literally earth shaking as the Gog-war it must have another witness, it cannot be an outlier. Indeed, God gave multiple witnesses about the Gog war when he spoke “in former days by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years” (Ezek 38:17).

The outline below presents a heading with the feature common to both Gog and his war and the Beast and Armageddon. The Ezekiel passage is first followed by other passages that speak of the Beast (Antichrist, man of sin, son of Perdition, little horn, etc.). We will see that many prophets before Ezekiel did indeed speak about Gog and his war. In another chapter we will consider the name Gog and how it is an excellent title of Israel’s coming enemy.

Table of Nations

All nations will come against Jerusalem. All the nations in Ezekiel 38 and 39 represent all the sons of Noah, which are the stock that all people came from. Not every nation is mentioned as that would take a while and they change their names over time. Nevertheless, by comparing the nations of Ezekiel 38-39, we can see how they represent the people from the Genesis 10 Table of Nations.

In Midrash Wayosha’ (Jellinek, “B. H.” i. 56) Gog is the leader of the seventy-two nations of the world, minus one (Israel), and makes war against the Most High; he is smitten down by God.334

The names in Genesis 10 were the descendants of Japhet, Ham, and Shem, the three sons of Noah. They all went to their respective places, and they had children, and they became people groups. Over time, continued to spread out all over the world. Rather than trying to pin a biblical place to a specific geographical location (e.g., Cush = Ethiopia), we get a much broader view if we realize that the text is talking about the nations of the world. The peoples in Ezekiel 38 are the same as those of the table of nations.

Table 14. Genesis 10 Table of Nations.

Figure 59. Division of peoples throughout the world based on Genesis 10.

Looking at the map, green are the sons of Ham, yellow are the sons of Shem, and pink are the sons of Japheth. These areas where the various people groups settled; and then they spread out from there. They went east to Asia, west to Europe, and eventually to America, and they went north and south. All these different groups have gone out from there. We do not have to look only exclusively around the nation of Israel. We do not have to only look in the Middle East even though it has a big part to play. The bottom line is we are looking at the entire world.
