The Millennium: Heaven on Earth? (Video 1 of 2)

If the earth is destroyed and the heavens pass away at the second coming of Jesus, then what will there be during the Millennium? What is the beloved city that Satan will attack after the thousand years? Why is the New Jerusalem called the bride of Christ? When do the new heavens and earth come to be? The biblical evidence demonstrates the new heavens and earth come about at the beginning of the thousand year reign of Christ, not after as is commonly thought.

The placement of the new heavens and new earth traditionally comes after the Great white throne judgment. The trouble is there are too many verses that argue against that. In this short expose, we will consider some verses, that if taken literally, prohibit the above interpretation.

The first thing we need to consider is that the earth will be in such havoc that the Lord must recreate it at (or shortly after) the second coming because it will be uninhabitable; all the oceans will have been turned to blood and be full of rotting dead corpses of all the sea creatures — certainly not a nice place to live!

Therefore, we see that the heavens pass away and the earth is utterly devastated at the second coming and thus a new heavens and new earth are absolutely necessary. In Isaiah 65:17 God declares that He will make new heavens and a new earth which from reading the passage is occurring at the beginning of the millennium/messianic age.

The basic chronology therefore is as follows:
The great tribulation
The second coming
The judgment of the nations (separation of the sheep and the goats) (Mat 25:31-41, Joel 3:2)
The new heavens and and the new earth (possibly before the judgment of Joel 3:2)
The millennium, Jesus ruling with a rod of iron (Isa 11, Rev 20:1-10)
The Great White Throne Judgment
The rethinking of when the new heavens and new earth occur takes time to accept. It took me a while because I kept thinking that no thinks that and therefore I shouldn’t believe it either. But then I just kept seeing it in Scripture. In the end, the plain interpretation of Scripture won.

The Messianic Age: The Millennium and Beyond (The Beginning of the New Heavens and Earth)

The Messianic Age: The Millennium and Beyond

The typical end-times sequencing is

  1. The great tribulation
  2. The second coming
  3. The judgment of the nations (separation of the sheep and the goats) (Mat 25:31-41, Joel 3:2)
  4. The millennium, Jesus ruling with a rod of iron (Isa 11, Rev 20:1-10)
  5. The Great White Throne Judgment
  6. The new heavens and and the new earth
The first thing we need to consider is that the earth will be in such havoc that the Lord must recreate it at (or shortly after) the second coming because it will be uninhabitable; all the oceans will have been turned to blood and be full of rotting dead corpses of all the sea creatures – certainly not a nice place to live!
Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became blood as of a dead [man;] and every living creature in the sea died. (Revelation 16:3) Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. (Revelation 16:4)
This will be followed by every island and every mountain moving out of their places.
Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.(Revelation 16:20)
In a parallel passage, Isaiah says the earth will fall and not rise again:
The earth is violentlybroken, The earth is splitopen, The earth is shaken exceedingly. (Isaiah 24:19) The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again. (Isaiah 24:20)
Finally, the heavens are going to roll up like a scroll.
All the host of heaven shall be dissolved, And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll; All their host shall fall down As the leaf falls from the vine, And as fruit falling from a fig tree. (Isaiah 34:4)
The heavens are the same as the veil that the prophet Isaiah talked about
Oh, that You would rend [tear, break] the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence. (Isaiah 64:1)
John, in the book of Revelation, was permitted to see the fulfillment of Isaiah’s request when he noted:
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. (Revelation 19:11)
Peter told us that the day that the Lord returns is when the heavens will pass away.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. (2 Peter 3:10)
Whereas Peter stated that the elements would melt with fervent heat, the Psalmist described it as:
The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. (Psalms 97:5)
If we should ask why will the earth begin to melt, the answer is that his return is when the earth is finally exposed to his great fiery-lightning presence.
For behold, the LORD will come with fire And with His chariots, like a whirlwind, To render His anger with fury, And His rebuke with flames of fire(Isaiah 66:15) For by fire and by His sword The LORD will judge all flesh; And the slain of the LORD shall be many. (Isaiah 66:16)
The parallel passage in 2 Thessalonians reiterates the truth of that moment:
…when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, (2 Thessalonians 1:7) in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 1:8)
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.  (Isaiah 65:17) They shall build houses and inhabit [them;] They shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. (Isa 65:21)  They shall not labor in vain, Nor bring forth children for trouble; For they [shall be] the descendants of the blessed of the LORD, And their offspring with them. (Isa 65:23)) The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, The lion shall eat straw like the ox, And dust [shall be] the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,” Says the LORD. (Isa 65:25)
The new heavens and earth come first and then God’s elect, the Jews, begin to build houses and have children. What definitively demonstrates that the new heavens and earth in this passage is during the millennium is from verse 20 which states that death will still be possible.
“No more shall an infant from there [live but a few] days, Nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days; For the child shall die one hundred years old, and the sinner [being] one hundred years old shall be accursed. (Isa 65:20)
Commentators have either glossed over this passage or, in the case of the Pulpit commentary, have suggested that Isaiah was confused! That idea is based on the suggestion of Delitzsch who suggested that there would be three ages:
  1. The first age, or ordinary human life, as we have hitherto known it a checkered scene of sin and holiness, of happiness and misery, of sorrow and rejoicing.
  2. The second age, or the period of the millennium, in which “the patriarchal measure of human life will return, in which death will no more break off the life that is just beginning to bloom, and in which the war of man with the animal world will be exchanged for peace without danger.
  3. And the third age, or a final state of happiness in heaven; or the heavenly Jerusalem, when death will be destroyed, and sin will be no more, and tears will be wiped from all eyes, and the former things will be passed away altogether. (Rev 21:4) The three ages are distinctly marked only in the apocalyptic vision of St. John the divine. (Re 20 Re 21) Isaiah and the other Old Testament prophets have an indistinct view, in which the second age and the third age are confused together, the characteristics being chiefly those of Age II, but some of the characteristics of Age III being intermingled. (The Pulpit Commentary, 1880 – 1919, Isaiah 65:17)
There cannot be three ages because John clearly stated in Revelation 21:1 that “the first heavens and the first earth passed away” which means that there can only be two ages and not three. God further underscores this reality by stating in Isaiah 66:22
“For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD, “So shall your descendants and your name remain.  (Isaiah 66:22)
This is stated in in Daniel 7:18 as well:
‘But the saints [Jews] of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.’ (Dan 7:18)
Once we see that the new heavens and new earth must go at the beginning of the millennium so many other pieces of our end-times puzzle fit into place. The key is to take things literally. We also begin to see God’s promises to Israel in a different light. I suggest that replacement theology, which has permeated our theology more than we realize, has gotten us off track on the timing of the new heavens and earth. God promised that he will establish the kingdom and the Jews would be the head and not the tail and that kingdom, would never, ever pass away.  (Dan 7:18)
The basic chronology therefore is as follows:
  1. The great tribulation
  2. The second coming
  3. The judgment of the nations (separation of the sheep and the goats) (Mat 25:31-41, Joel 3:2)
  4. The new heavens and and the new earth (possibly before the judgment of Joel 3:2)
  5. The millennium, Jesus ruling with a rod of iron (Isa 11, Rev 20:1-10)
This and other topics will be covered in my new book, The Edge of Eternity.

The Angelic Domain: Created Before Genesis 1:1 or After?

Many have suggested that God created the angels before the creation of the heavens and earth. Did He create them outside of time and space? The simple answer is no and here is why. Before anything was, before the blackness of space, before the void, there was the King, the Almighty, the Self-Existent, the One who was, and is and is to come. He existed in and of his own domain. God wasn’t “anywhere” because there was no “where”. There was only God. Nevertheless, He created from nothing a space, a domain outside of Himself that was not. This expanse, dimension, He called shamaim (or heavens). He filled this domain with substance, material called eretz (earth). We can think of the heavens like a water bottle filled with water (eretz).  Imagine God by Himself, of Himself, bringing forth from Himself a dimension, a void, filled with only eretz also called ‘tehom’ the ‘depth’ which had not been before. However, on that first day, the earth was only in the process of being formed. This is why God paused and explained what He meant by ‘water’. [1] He did not mean the ball of soil, dirt, land, that Adam stood on when his eyes opened and beheld God. Eretz – earth on the first day was in fact water. [2]

From that water God formed the light to fill the darkness which He also created (Isa 45:7). The first day was the beginning of differentiations. Before the creation there was no differentiation (outside of God Himself and His indescribable tri-unity). On that first day God created things that were not. He created a space outside of Himself; He created darkness which had never been (Isa 45:7) for God is light and there is no darkness in Him whatsoever (I John 1:5). Thus the absence of His glorious light in the newly created void was new and different which is why the King revealed by the prophet Isaiah ‘I form the light and create darkness’. Until that moment darkness, (the absence of light) did not exist.

Therefore before day one (or Genesis 1:1) there was God and because He is light there was no such thing as darkness. When He created the void, space, it initially was devoid of God’s light and did not even have created photons. When God said ‘let there be light’ is the moment when God created the particle-waves known as photons.

We can see, therefore, that before the creation of a domain and substance, there was no place even for the angels. Their creation is not clearly detailed like the creation of Adam, however we can piece together some clues from the book of Job: “Where were you when I laid the

foundations of the earth?…Who determined its measurements? …Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7). Job 38 has day two in mind because the line had been stretched out upon it. The line (was pointed out to me, by a brother whose name I forget), is where day and night meet on the earth as seen from space – there literally is a line passing over it. The angels were obviously there and were observers of what God was doing while not dependent on the earth (like man would be). This is the earliest evidence we have of the angels. We hear nothing of them before this.

The next thing we have to consider is that before the fall of man there was only one domain in which the spiritual (angels, God) would exist with the physical (Adam). The one domain was split in two because of the fall of man. We know this because there is currently a veil between the heavenly domain/realm and the earthly. We learn this from Isaiah 25:7 which states that the veil, which covers all nations, is going to be removed. “And He will destroy on this mountain the surface of the covering cast over all people, And the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces…” (Isa 25:7-8). Isaiah also says “oh that you would rend the heavens and come down.” (Isa 64:1) We hear of the sky receding like a scroll in Isaiah 34 and Revelation 6. The prophets also saw the heavens open on occasion (Ezekiel 1, Revelation 4, 19). Stephen also saw the heavens open when he was being stoned (Acts 7).

We also know that Satan was in Eden, the garden of God, which was associated with the mountain of God (Ezekiel 28:12-18). That mountain is the same mountain that we read about in Isaiah 14, which Satan attempted to climb and sit upon the “mountain of the congregation.” It is also the same that is spoken of in Hebrews “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels.” (Heb 12:22). The mountain of God is in fact the heavenly Jerusalem according to this verse and others.

Therefore, the mountain of God was created when He created everything else and also that abode was in a common domain/dimension before the fall. God walked in the cool of the evening in the Garden of Eden, which is the same place where Satan was – the mountain of God. Eden and the mountain of God are closely connected.  This means that God’s abode and man’s were in the same domain and only split after the sentencing and casting out from the Garden with the way blocked to the tree of life. In other words, the casting out was not simply a spatial removal but a dimensional shift. The spiritual domain was divorced from the natural/physical at that point and those two will be recombined when the New Jerusalem comes down out of heaven and remains on the earth forever.

With all that in view we see that before the creation of the heavens and earth there was only God who existed in and of His own dimension. There was no other space out there, no black emptiness, no void –just God. There was only light for even darkness is something that He created (Isaiah 45:7). We also conclude that the traditional view of God dwelling “up there” and Adam being “down here” is not accurate. Nor is the belief that we will dwell “up there” in heaven for eternity.  What we understand to be “heaven” in the Scriptures is in fact the Holy Mountain/Heavenly Jerusalem – which comes down to the earth in the age to come.  So we conclude that only God existed before Genesis 1:1; the angels did not exist before then. The current separation of God’s domain from man’s is only a temporary condition which was not in place when God declared everything to be very good. As for the angels, they were therefore created after the heavens and earth of Genesis 1:1 (day two appears to be when they were created) and they were dwelling in the same domain as man until the separation of the two domains. God’s original intent was to dwell with His creatures on the earth. Corruption (sin) and death impeded that intent for several thousand years. Nevertheless, God will bring His original intent to pass and will dwell with mankind forever from His holy mountain, which will be on the earth – a place in which God, angels, and man will all dwell together.

Many of the proofs are discussed in my course on the Messianic Age which you can listen to here.

[1] “The disjunctive clause (conjunction + subject + verb) at the beginning of v. 2 gives background information for the following narrative, explaining the state of things when “God said…” (v. 3)…. Some translate 1:2a “and the earth became,” arguing that v. 1 describes the original creation of the earth, while v. 2 refers to a judgment that reduced it to a chaotic condition. Verses 3ff. then describe the re-creation of the earth. However, the disjunctive clause at the beginning of v. 2 cannot be translated as if it were relating the next event in a sequence. If v. 2 were sequential to v. 1, the author would have used the vav consecutive followed by a prefixed verbal form and the subject.” NET Bible Notes on Genesis 1:2.

[2] “That is, what we now call “the earth.” The creation of the earth as we know it is described in vv. 9-10. Prior to this the substance which became the earth (= dry land) lay dormant under the water.” NET Bible Notes on Genesis 1:2.

The Messianic Age: Millennium and Beyond

Calvary Chapel Bible College of Costa Mesa

Messianic Age

2 Credits

Fall 2011

Instructor: Douglas Hamp M.A. Hebrew University

Course Description

Much of our eschatology rightly deals with the events that lead up to the Second Coming of Jesus. However, little attention is given to looking at the events that happen thereafter. This class will explore from a very bible-centric perspective the Messianic Age/Millenium. We will begin by understanding the literal hermeneutic and how reading literally God’s Word reveals many exciting details of our glorious future. We will also look at the centrality of Israel, our future bodies, aspects of daily life, the decorations of the city, God’s dwelling with mankind, the role of the river of life and trees of life the length of the Millennium where will it be, who is there, what the Rabbis and Church Fathers thought, (Augustine, Justin Martyr), the size of the City, when the creation the of the New Heavens and New Earth occur (what about the first set), place of the H.S., the role of the Sun and the Moon, the role of the feast of tabernacles, and the judgments.

Course Objectives

A heavy emphasis will be placed on reading large portions of Scripture before each class. Upon completion of the course, the student will able to look at the Millennium from the entirety of Scripture. With that in mind, some of the portions of eschatology ought to come alive in a fresh way. Once we see all that God has in store for Israel and for those of us that have been grafted in, then we can live with the anticipation of what is coming.

Course Requirements

The student is required to read all of the assigned reading especially from the Bible! A list of what the student must do to pass the course.  Include required reading, any assignments, tests or papers with corresponding due dates.

There are three requirements:

  1. 1.       Textbook Reading: 20%

Every student is required to read the selected chapters from The First Six Days, Corrupting the Image, and the articles in their entirety. There will be a number of reading checks given over the course of the semester. A two paragraph summary is required for each chapter / article

  1. 2.       Weekly Bible Reading: 30%                A heavy emphasis is placed on a wide range of Scriptures dealing with the Millennium/Messianic Age. Students will give serious time to the study of the assigned verses/chapters. God’s Word alone is our guide – not the ideas of men.
  2. 3.       Research/TimeLine: 50% (Oct 12th)

Each student will prepare a timeline starting from the Second Coming to the Destruction of Satan and Beyond. The READER will serve as your proof texts for the project. The student must include all significant verse references on the timeline. Project may be done by hand on poster board, in an Office-type program (M.S. Word or Excel) or even with an online app. However, it must be very thorough.

Attendance

CCBC requires 100% attendance for all classes and that you be at your seat at the hour it starts.. Attendance will be taken by your teacher at the beginning of each class. *EXCUSED ABSENCES can be made up by listening to the MP’3 audio recording of the class session missed and by turning in a typed or legibly hand written copy of your notes to the CCBC Registrar within one week of your absence. Recordings are available on MP3’(no longer on web-page) for $3.00 at the CCBC office 9am-4:00pm M-F. Credit Students can only miss and make up a total of three Excused Absences. PLEASE NOTE: If you are tardy, over 15 minutes late to your class, it will be considered an absence. All unexcused absences will lower and affect your final class letter grade by half a letter grade. (An earned letter grade of an A will become an A- etc. etc.)

*EXCUSED ABSENCES

Please remember, in order to change your unexcused absence into an excused absences you must contact the CCBC Registrar within one week. Excused absences include genuine emergencies such as but not limited to: death in the family, illness, traffic accident etc. etc. Unexcused absences: such as but not limited to: sleeping in, surfing, vacations etc. etc.
